Review

The Huawei RRU5901 is a multimode remote radio unit designed for distributed base station architectures in the 1800 MHz band. Based on software-defined radio technology, it can operate in multiple supported modes through software configuration. The unit uses a 4T4R radio structure, receives from 1710 to 1785 MHz, transmits from 1805 to 1880 MHz and provides an instantaneous bandwidth of 45 MHz. The RRU5901 supports LTE FDD and the multimode combinations identified by Huawei as GL, LM, GLM, LN (SUL) and GLN (SUL). Its capacity includes up to eight GSM carriers, two LTE FDD carriers with 5, 10, 15 or 20 MHz bandwidth per carrier, up to eight LTE NB-IoT carriers and one NR supplementary uplink carrier. Maximum RF output power is 4 x 40 W. Receiver sensitivity depends on the configured technology and antenna arrangement. The specification lists typical values from -114.0 dBm for GSM and -106.6 dBm for LTE FDD with one antenna to -119.5 dBm theoretical for GSM and -112.1 dBm for LTE FDD with four antennas. Typical LTE NB-IoT sensitivity ranges from -127.3 dBm with one antenna to -132.8 dBm with four antennas under the stated test conditions. The unit operates from -48 V DC with an allowed range of -36 V DC to -57 V DC. Dimensions are 400 x 300 x 100 mm and weight is 15 kg, both specified without the housing. Typical power consumption is 337 W at 25°C and 50 percent traffic load. The RRU5901 is rated IP65, supports operating temperatures down to -40°C and provides two CPRI ports with 1.25, 2.5, 4.9 or 9.8 Gbit/s rates in star, chain or dual-star topology.
